School meals have undergone a massive transformation over the last few years and here in Barnsley we strive to devise healthy well balanced menus that pupils (and staff!) will enjoy.
Nutrition and learning go hand in hand.
Well-nourished children tend to have higher test scores, better school attendance, and fewer behaviour problems in the classroom.
Under-nourished children may have difficulty focusing on task, have lower self-esteem, and are absent more often from school.
We understand the enormity of the responsibility we have in contributing toward the health and wellbeing of our young people and are aware that education in this area is key - that is why we are happy to provide as much classroom support as possible!
In this section are just some of the ways in which we can help you to make lessons fun and interesting. We are open to any ideas that you have so please feel free to come and discuss them with our kitchen staff.
We believe that if we work together and pool resources we can increase young people’s interest and awareness of what they are putting into their bodies and how it affects them.
School Trips
Let us know if you would like us to put together something specific in line with the theme of your trip. How about getting the kids involved to come up with a packed lunch idea for the day? We will make up the winning lunch for you!
Theme Days
We can devise a menu in line with many themed events that may be taking place in school, we can even theme the dining room to complement this.

We know today’s youngsters can be picky. It is all our jobs to take away the stigma of what children may think about ‘green vegetables’ or fruit. The best way to do this is let them touch, smell, and taste food.
Our Tasting stations are also an excellent educational tool which we are happy for you to use. Use them to promote healthy meal ideas and encourage children to explore a variety of foods.

Let us know what healthy eating challenges you are setting and we will work with you to ensure success!
Are you teaching about conditions such as diabetes, Heart conditions or osteoporosis? We take into consideration all aspects of health when putting together our menu and choosing the ingredients.
We would be happy to arrange a demonstration of the cooking skills we employ to retain the nutritional value of the food we serve. Did you know, the vast majority of food we serve is cooked on the premises daily.
Again we are happy to arrange demonstrations of this – and will even provide some small samples at the end!
We will happily pass on any of our recipes to you with an explanation of how we have adapted them to improve their nutritional value – did you know that our ever popular chocolate brownies have beetroot in them?! And our Spaghetti Bolognese contains 4 different vegetables?!
Run a competition for pupils to devise a recipe where by a popular dish can be tailored to include healthy ingredients, increasing its nutritional value. We will create the winning dish to be included in our regular menu, as well as publishing the recipe on this website!
