Your child can benefit from drinking milk every day at school. Allowing your child to enjoy a carton of semi skimmed milk at school each day provides great health benefits. In some schools fluoridated dental milk is also available if you want your child to take part in the dental milk scheme, please contact your school.
Diet and vitamin intake
Research indicates that drinking milk is associated with improved intake of vitamins
and minerals including vitamin A, zinc, calcium and magnesium
Bone health
A carton of milk will help contribute to a child's daily calcium intake. Adequate intake of calcium in childhood and adolescence are important for the development of healthy bones and reduces the risk of dental erosion and decay.
Who is entitled to free milk at school?
Children under the age of 5 years (payment is due in the term in which your child turns 5 years) are entitled to receive a daily carton of milk free of charge (the scheme is subsidised by the European Union & the Welfare Food Scheme). Children receiving free school meals also benefit.
What can you expect from the menus available?
More Fruit and Vegetables included in every meal.
Recipes have been amended to include more fruit and vegetables in the food we serve.
Salad bars are encouraging pupils to enjoy additional salad with each meal combination.
More Oily Fish
It is recommended that oily fish such as mackerel and salmon should be served at least once every three weeks. Mackerel and salmon contain omega 3 oil which is essential in our diet as it plays an important role in the immune system, health and development.
Healthier Drinks
The only drinks we serve are water, pure fruit juices, milk and milk drinks with less than 5% added sugar.
No confectionery or savoury snacks are served at all.
Confectionery such as chocolate bars, sweets, crisps, and savoury snacks are no longer served.
Choosing a tasty filled jacket potato, traditional two course meal or food from the deli counter will ensure your child's school lunch will provide the essential nutrients required.
Deep fried foods
Our menus do not contain more than two deep fried foods, such as chips and batter coated products, in a single week. This helps to reduce pupil's intake of fat.
Vegetarian meal options are available every day of the week, along with the daily salad bar selection where your child can help him/her self to as much as they want!
We are also able to cater for various diets (medical, cultural and ethical) and food intolerances. There is a set procedure for dealing with medical diets and allergies, your dietitian or Doctor should inform us so that we can be sure we are providing your child with the right diet. All catering staff are extremely vigilant, as are the teaching staff and midday assistants in school. They are skilled in gentle encouragement and flexible in catering for individual requirements. Children are never forced to eat anything they don't like and our staff would always have a discreet word with teachers if difficulties arose.
